Do students need Google accounts?
For managed meetings it is much smoother if they do. Without them, joining depends on your Workspace meeting settings.
Does it clash with Google sign-in?
No. Sign-in and Meet use the same Workspace domain but are separate consents, so you can enable either one on its own.
